The support from people in the Chinese countryside helped the Communists more than support from people in the cities helped the Nationalists because many more people lived in the countryside, so they made the Communists the stronger side.

The Nationalist Party was more popular in the cities of China because the wealthy people that supported the Nationalist lived there. But other people had mixed feelings. Some Chineses supported the Communist Party although they lived in the cities. So, people in the cities did not present a united front to favor the Nationalist. The people from the countryside of China were the ones who helped the Communist. They were people that lived in poor conditions and saw a chance of a better life with the Communist Party of Mao Zedong.
