During the Communist period there were many authors who were not willing to support the party without restriction and were punished for that. Those who were lucky would escape to Western countries. Those who were not would end up in prison or even worse. Names of Milovan Djilas, Alexander Solzhenitsyn were among the most famous dissidents.
