Answer:

a) COCl₂.

b) The molecular formula is COCl₂.

Explanation:

To obtain empirical formula of phosgene you should divide elemental compositions over atomic mass of each atom, and divide these results between the smallest, thus:

C = 12,14%/12,01 = 1,01

O = 16,17%/16 = 1,01

Cl = 71,69%/35,45 = 2,02

Empirical formula:

C = 1,01/1,01 = 1

O = 1,01/1,01 = 1

Cl = 2,02/1,01 = 2

C₁O₁Cl₂ ≡ COCl₂

b) You need to find the molar mass of the empirical formula to determine the ratio of the real formula, thus:

1×C 12,01g/mol =

1×O 16 g/mol =

2×Cl 35,35g/mol = 98,91g/mol

As real molecular mass is 98,9 g/mol. The molecular formula: COCl₂

I hope it helps!

A binary ionic compound is known to contain a cation with 51 protons and 48 electrons. The anion contains one-third the number o
7nadin3 [17]

Answer:

SbCl_3

Explanation:

The cation contains 51 protons and 48 electrons. The electrons are only lost not protons, so the element which corresponds to atomic number 51 is the cation which is Antimony (Sb).

Also, the charge on the cation is 51 - 48 = 3

This is because neutral atom contains the same number of electrons as protons.

Given the anion has one-third protons as cation which means thta:

Number of protons in anion = \frac {51}{3}=17

This corresponds to chlorine atom. The electrons are 1 greater than protons means that it has gain 1 electron.

So,

Sb     Cl

3         1

Cross multiply the valency.

So, formula is SbCl_3

We add a 1.20-g sample of dry ice to a 755-mL flask containing nitrogen gas at a temperature of 25.0 C and a pressure of 725mmHg
yaroslaw [1]

Answer:

Total pressure is 1396 mmHg

Explanation:

By:

PV/RT = n

It is possible to obtain the initial moles of nitrogen gas, where:

P is pressure (725 mmHg = 0,954 atm)

V is volume (0,755L)

R is gas constant (0,082atmL/molK)

T is temperature (25,0°C = 298,15 K)

Replacing:

n = 0,02946 moles of nitrogen gas.

The moles of dry ice (CO₂; molar mass= 44,01 g/mol) are:

1,20 g × (1mol/44,01g) = 0,02727 moles of dry ice.

When dry ice sublimes, total moles are:

0,02727 + 0,02946 = 0,05673 moles

With the temperature (25,0°C = 298,15 K) and volume (0,755L) it is possible to obtain total pressure, thus:

P = nRT/V

Replacing:

P = 1,837 atm × (760 mmHg/1atm) = 1396 mmHg

I hope it helps!
