The table below shows the ticket rates for whale watching trips offered by Ocean Tours. Age Ticket Price Under three years free

Three to 12 years $36 Over 12 years $48 On a certain day, the company took 92 people on whale watching trips. There were 40 children aged 12 and under, of which some children were under three years. If x represents the number of children under three years, which equation can be used to find the value of x, where C represents the total amount of money collected from tickets that day?

If there are 40 children aged twelve and under and x of them are under three years old, 40 - x aged three twelve years old. From the 92 people that where taken by the company on whale watching trips, 52 are over twelve years old. The equation that best show the total cost, C is
                                (40 - x)(36) + (52)(48) = C
Rearranging the equation gives,
                                       x = 40 - ((C - 2496)/ 36)

Find the extreme values of the function and where they occur. f(x)=x-4sqrt(x)
Tema [17]
The extreme values of the function f(x) = x - 4sqrt(x) occur at the values of x for which f'(x) = 0

f'(x) = 1 - 2/sqrt(x) = 0
sqrt(x) - 2 = 0
sqrt(x) = 2
x = 4
To check for minimum or maximum,
f''(x) = 1/(sqrt(x))^3 = 1/(sqrt(4))^3 = 1/(2^3) = 1/8 => the point is a minimum.

Therefore, the minimum value = f(4) = 4 - 4sqrt(4) = 4 - 4(2) = 4 - 8 = -4 and occurs at x = 4.
