The tea act was impulsive and unreasonable, the British lost lots of money that way. The Patriots could have just continued to boycott the tea but they chose not to, making the British fear them more. Since the British fear them, they will treat them worse in a futile attempt to tame them.
The tea act was a way of protest against the tax unfairly put on the Patriots. The Patriots boycotted the tea but felt that it wasn't enough, leading to them dumping crates of tea into the Boston Harbor. Like this, the British started to take them a bit more seriously, and actually started considering war.
