The factors that make police work especially stressful when compared to other occupations are:
The stress which is inherent in police work.
Internally arising pressure from police department practices and policies.
External stress from the criminal justice system and society in general.
Internal stress faced by individual officers.
Policing stress arises from several activities of police work. For example, changes in body rhythm caused by changes in monthly shifts reduce productivity. The change from a day shift to a rotation shift or a graveyard shift not only requires biological adjustments, but also complicates the personal life of the officers. The conflict of roles between work (public services, law enforcement, maintaining ethical standards) and personal responsibilities as a spouse, parent or friend acts as a stress factor.
