The boll weevil, introduced to the state in 1915, greatly reduced state cotton yields. Georgia's cotton acreage declined from 5.2 million acres in 1914 to 2.6 million in 1923. Though I'm sure you know this one, Pearl Harbor was a surprise aerial attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor on Oahu Island, Hawaii, by the Japanese that precipitated the entry of the United States into World War II.
