First, estimate.  Represent 12.42 by 12 and 28.6 by 30.  Then the product is 360.  Doing the same problem on a calculator results in a product of 355.212.

A coffee pot holds 5 quarts of coffee. How much is this in cups?
KATRIN_1 [288]
1 gallon = 4 quarts
1 Quart = 2 pints
1 Pint = 2 cups
2 (amount of pints in a quart) x 5 (amount of quarts) = 10 = how many pints
10 x 2 (amount of cups in a pint) = 20
20 = how many cups in 5 quarts

Jill sold half of her comic books then bought 16 more, she now has 36. With how many did she begin with? Break it down please
marusya05 [52]
A: 40

Let’s do this problem backwards.

TOTAL BOOKS RN: 36

1)
“Jill... then bought 16 more...”

36 - 16 = 20

After subtracting that amount, we would end up with half of the books Jill DID NOT sell.

2)
2 • 20 = 40

At this point, we multiplied amount of books she had after she sold half of her comic books by the reciprocal of 1/2

And now you have your answer!
