When you have the 10^5 multiplying to 2.83, you are moving the number further to the left of the decimal, making it larger every power of 10. if it was 4 powers of 10, the answer would be 28,300, 3 powers of 10 would be 2,830, etc.
PS. I think you forgot to add the decimal in 2.83, 283 x 10^5 is not written in Scientific Notation.
