You have to make the denominators the same so 2/3 is the same as 4/6 because you do 3*2 to get six and whatever you do to the denominator you do to the numerator so you do 2*2 to get 4. Then add 4/6 and 5/6 to get 9/6 which is the same as 1 and 3/6 or 1 and a 1/2. Then do 5 minus 1 and 1/2 to get the answer of 3 and 1/2.
First you can convert 2/3 to 4/6 and add that to 5/6 which gives you 9/6 simplify and get 1 and 1/2. Then subtract that from 5 which gives you 3 and 1/2
