Thanksgiving spending, Part II. Exercise 4.14 provides a 95% confidence interval for the average spending by American adults dur

ing the six-day period after Thanksgiving 2009: ($80.31, $89.11). (a) A local news anchor claims that the average spending during this period in 2009 was $100. What do you think of her claim? (b) Would the news anchor’s claim be considered reasonable based on a 90% confidence interval? Why or why not? (Do not actually calculate the interval.)

Answer:

(a) The claim made by the local news anchor is not correct that the average spending during this period in 2009 was $100.

(b) The news anchor’s claim will not be considered reasonable based on a 90% confidence interval.

Step-by-step explanation:

The (1 - <em>α</em>)% confidence interval for the population mean is,

CI=\bar x\pm z_{\alpha/2}\times  \frac{\sigma}{\sqrt{n}}

The factors affecting the width of the interval are:

  1. Standard deviation.
  2. Sample size.
  3. Confidence level.

In this case the 95% confidence interval for the average spending by American adults during the six-day period after Thanksgiving 2009 is provided as ($80.31, $89.11).

On making decisions about a hypothesis test based on confidence interval, the rule followed is:

If the confidence interval contains the null value then the null hypothesis will be accepted or else rejected.

(a)

The hypothesis to test the claim made by the local newspaper anchor is:

<em>H</em>₀: μ = $100 vs. <em>Hₐ: </em>μ <em>≠</em> $100

The 95% confidence interval does not contains the null value, i.e. $100.

Thus, the null hypothesis will be rejected at 5% level of significance.

Conclusion:

The claim made by the local news anchor is not correct that the average spending during this period in 2009 was $100.

(b)

The critical value of the <em>z</em>-statistic increases on increasing the confidence level and decreases on decreasing the confidence level.

So if the confidence level was 90% instead of 95% the critical value of <em>z</em> will be decreased.

And since the critical value is directly proportional to the width of the interval, the width will also decrease on decreasing the critical value.

So the 90% confidence interval will be much narrower than the interval, ($80.31, $89.11).

Hence the null value will still not be included in the interval.

Thus, the news anchor’s claim will not be considered reasonable based on a 90% confidence interval.

The volume of a cylinder is 400x cm. The radius of the base of the cylinder is 4 cm. What is the height of the cylinder
irina1246 [14]

Answer: 8cm

Step-by-step explanation:

V=\pi r^2h

Solve for h;

h=\frac{V}{\pi r^2}

h=\frac{400cm^3}{(3.14)(4cm)^2}

h=7.96\\h=8

Which value, when placed in the box, would result in a system of equations with infinitely many solutions? y = -2x 4 6x 3y =
wariber [46]

The missing value is 12 in a system of equations with infinitely many solutions conditions.

It is given that in the system of equations there are two equations given:

\rm y =n -2x+4\\\rm and \\\rm 6x+3y= ?

It is required to find the missing value in the second equation.

<h3>What is a linear equation?</h3>

It is defined as the relation between two variables if we plot the graph of the linear equation we will get a straight line.

We have equations:

\rm y = -2x+4 ....(1)\\  \\\rm 6x+3y= ?  ....(2)

Let's suppose the missing value is 'Z'

We know that the two pairs of equations have infinitely many solutions if and if they have the same coefficients of variables and the same constant on both sides.

From equation (1)

\rm y = -2x+4 \\\\\rm 2x+y=4(multiply both the sides by 3)

\rm 6x+3y=12 ...(3)

By comparing the equation (2) and (3), we get

M = 12

Thus, the missing value is 12 in a system of equations with infinitely many solutions conditions.

Learn more about the linear equation.

A student has some $1 and 5$ bills. He has a total of 15 bills that are worth $47. How many of each bill does he have?
Trava [24]

Answer:

Seven one dollar bills and eight five dollar bills.

Step-by-step explanation:

8 + 7 = 15 bills

8 x 5 = $40

7 x 1 = $7

40 + 7 = $47

47 dollars and 15 bills.
