There was no use screaming for help, I was alone in the big, empty house. Whatever this was, I would have to face it myself. The light clicked on, and I was blinded, my bleary eyes adjusting to the darkness. Turning, I looked at my attacker to find...

A gnome? He looked like something straight off the neighbor's lawn, with pointy ears, a little pointed hat, and a portly belly.

"Come." the gnome said in a gruff voice. "There isn't much time to explain."

"Explain what?" I said, still in my pajamas and very confused. "Where are we going?"

"The darklands, of course, your highness. Your dragon awaits you."

"I think you have me mistaken with someone else. I'm not a monarch, I'm just a sleepy kid. And I sure don't own a dragon." The gnome sighed, and touched my head. It all came flooding back. The eternal war, my dragon, the fight against the darkness to save the world above.

"Shall we, Gnolon?" I said, swinging my feet out of the bed.

"Indeed, your grace."he replied. And with that, we set off.

Icy fingers gripped my arms in the darkness, my heart pounded fearfully in my chest, I needed to run but I couldn't move. I struggled against the harsh grip, no doubt I would be left with bruises if I ever managed to escape, I kicked out blindly, connecting with something apparently living because my arm was freed. I forced my feet to move, running down the dark corridor as fast as I could, searching for a door or light anywhere. I felt like the walls were closing in as I heard the heavy footsteps behind me, I sped up with energy I didn't know I had. I felt my lungs start to burn as exhaustion slowed my feet, but I had to push on, I couldn't be caught, I just couldn't.

Something brushed my arm and I yanked it away out of reflex, hearing an angry snarl behind me. I spotted what could possibly be the outline of a door, it was a short distance away, but I had no idea if I could make it in time. I couldn't tell if the pounding in my ears was my erratic heartbeat or the impending footsteps as they got closer, closer, closer. The door was so close, I could almost reach it, almost, I stretched my hand towards it, reaching desperately for safety. There was no door, it was a trick of my desperate mind, I was cornered, there was no escape. I felt the icy fingers on my arm again and finally gave up.
