Suppose you have a bag of 10 coins. Nine of them are fair coins, that is, if you toss any of these 9 coins the probability of ge

tting a head, P(H) = 1/2. Similarly, probability of getting a tail, P(T) = 1/2. The other coin is biased — it has head on both sides. Use indicator random variables to compute expected number of heads, if all 10 coins are tossed together.

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

we have 10 coins

nine of them are fair coins, which means: P(H)=\frac{1}{2}; P(T)=\frac{1}{2}

but one coin is biased it has head on both sides which means P(H)=\frac{1}{1}; P(T)=\frac{0}{1}=0

expected number of heads for tossing 9 coins = 9(\frac{1}{2})=\frac{9}{2}=4.5

The coin 10 is biased  with only head on both sides

The expected number of heads tossing this coin is = 1

Therefore, the expected number of heads if all 10 coins are tossed together is =4.5+1=5.5

Using indicator random variables:

The number of unbiased coins = 9: n=9

P(H)=\frac{1}{2}=0.5\\\\F(x)=nP=9\times 0.5=9.5

One coin is biased with only head. Therefore:

F(x)=1

Finally, F(x)=4.5+1=5.5

The expected number of heads = 5.5

Solve x2 - 8x = 20 by completing the square. Which is the solution set of the equation?
Artyom0805 [142]

Answer:

{-2,10}

Step-by-step explanation:

x^2 - 8x = 20

Take the coefficient of x

-8

Divide by 2

-8/2 =-4

Square it

(-4)^2 =16

Add this to each side

x^2 - 8x+16 = 20+16

x^2 - 8x+16 = 36

The left hand side becomes( x + (-8/2) )^2

(x - 4)^2 = 36

Take the square root of each side

sqrt((x - 4)^2) =±sqrt( 36)

x-4 = ±6

Add 4 to each side

x-4+4 = 4±6

x = 4±6

x = 4+6       x = 4-6

x = 10        x = -2

The time a basketball player spends in the air when shooting a basket is called the "hang time." the vertical leap l measured i
Marina86 [1]
Dénote l the vertical leap, then the given equation can be written like this:
l(t)=4t^2\\\text{Since one inch equate 0.0833333 feet then 44 inches equate }\\44\times 0.0833333=3.6feet\\\text{Add to 33 feet like this:}\\33+3.6=36.6feet\\\text{Now we have to solve the equation:}\\4t^2=36.6\\\text{Divide over 4 we get:}\\t^2= \frac{36.6}{4}=9.15\\\text{Take the square root we get:}\\t=\sqrt{9.15}=3

The hang time equates then 3 seconds
