Newton's universal law of gravitation says that the force acting upon (and therefore the acceleration of) an object toward Earth should be inversely proportional to the square of its distance from the center of Earth.  It's this force of gravity on the surface of Earth that gives us our sense of weight.

The closer the object is to the center the stronger gravity acts on it. The further the object from the center the weaker gravity acts on it until it reaches a certain point where the gravity does not affect the object.
