Answer: The reducing agent is FeS and the oxidizing agent is HNO_3

Explanation:

Oxidizing agent is defined as the agent which oxidizes the other substance and itself gets reduced. It undergoes reduction reaction which means it gains electrons and the oxidation state of the substance gets reduced.

Reducing agent is defined as the agent which reduces the other substance and itself gets oxidized. It undergoes oxidation reaction which means it looses electrons and the oxidation state of the substance is increased.

For the given chemical equation:

3FeS+8HNO_3\rightarrow 3FeSO_4+8NO+4H_2O

On reactant side:

Oxidation state of Iron = +2

Oxidation state of Sulfur = -2

Oxidation state of oxygen = -2

Oxidation state of hydrogen = +1

Oxidation state of nitrogen = +5

On product side:

Oxidation state of Iron = +2

Oxidation state of Sulfur = +6

Oxidation state of oxygen = -2

Oxidation state of hydrogen = +1

Oxidation state of nitrogen = +2

As, oxidation state of Sulfur is increasing from -2 to +6, it is loosing electrons and thus it is undergoing oxidation reaction and FeS is considered as a reducing agent. And the oxidation state of Nitrogen in reducing from +5 to +2, it is gaining electrons and thus it is undergoing reduction reaction and HNO_3 is considered as an oxidizing agent.

Thus, The reducing agent is FeS and the oxidizing agent is HNO_3

The oxidizing agent is one which itself gets reduced and oxidizes other

Reduction : in this process the element accepts electron and gets reduced

Reducing agent is one which itself gets oxidized and reduces other

Oxidation : in this process the element loses electron and gets oxidized

Here the oxidation number of Sulphur change from -2 (FeS) to +6 (FeSO4) so it is oxidized and thus it is the reducing agent

The oxidation number of nitrogen changes from +5 (HNO3) to +2 (NO) thus it is reduced and thus it is the oxidizing agent

Which or these equations is balanced H2SO4 + 2Al > Al2(SO4)3 + H2 or 2KCl + Pb(NO3)2 > 2KNO3 + PbCl2
Dmitry_Shevchenko [17]

Balancing of chemical equation is essential because of the law of conservation of mass, which states that the mass of a system can not be created or removed.

The second equation is balanced

2KCl_(_a_q_) +Pb(NO_3)_2_(_a_q_) ==> 2KNO_3_(-a_q_) + PbCl_2(_a_q_)

This is because the number of elements of each atom in the product side equal the number of elements of each atom on the reactant side.

The first equation is not balanced

H_2SO_4 _(_a_q) + 2Al_(_s_) ==> Al(SO_4)_3_(_a_q_) + H_2_(_g_)

This is because there is 1 molecule of SO_4^{-2} on reactant side as compared to 3 molecules of SO_4^{-2}

To balance the equation we add a coefficient of 3 on sulphuric acid (H_2SO_4) and a coefficient of 3 on hydrogen (H_2)

3H_2SO_4_(_a_q_) + 2Al_(_s_) ==> Al(SO_4)_3_(_a_q_) + 3H_2_(_g_)

Which of the following is an advantage of using biopower?
zavuch27 [327]

Answer: Option (C) is the correct answer.

Explanation:

Biopower means production of electricity with the help of biomass. The unused wood, crops, agricultural residue, animal residue etc when burned then they help in generating biopower.

It is a renewable energy. Since biomass is readily available in most of the places. Therefore, the advantage of biopower is that it is also readily available in most places.

For example, bacterial decay produces a certain amount of heat which further helps in the production of energy.
