The "absolute value function" has a v-shaped graph that opens up and has its vertex at (0,0).  Plot a dark dot at (0,0).  Starting with your pencil point on this dot, move 1 unit to the right and then 1 unit up.  This represents a slope of 1/1, or simply 1.  Draw a straight line with slope 1 starting with the black dot at (0,0) and continuing upward and to the right.

Then reflect this line across the y-axis.  This 2nd line will have a slope of -1.

I'm including a short table of values that may help you with this graphing:

 x          y = |x|        (x, y)

 0           0              (0,0)

  1            1              (1,1)

   2          2        

   5           5

  -1            1

   -3           3           (-3,3)

and so on.
