First, we know that the fractions in the question have different denominators so know we must find its least common multiple. How do we do that? Well, we have to find the smallest multiple that can fit into 4 and 3, which are our denominators.
The LCM of 4 and 3 is 12. So now instead of 9/4 - 4/3 its now 27/12 - 16/12.
Confused on how we got 27/12 and 16/12?
So now that we know that the LCM is 12, we replace the denominators with 12. Now we have to think about what number can be multiplied to 4 that's gonna give us 12? Well, 4 × 3 = 12 (LCM) and now what we do to the bottom we do to the top so we have to do 9 × 3 which is 27. So now instead of 9/4 its now 27/12.
Then we do the same for the second fraction what number can be multiplied to 3 that's gonna give us 12? 4 × 3 = 12 (LCM) and now we multiply the numerator (top number) by 4 too. 4 × 4 = 16. And now instead of 4/3 it's now 16/12.
So now we do 27/12 - 16/12
And now that they have the same denominators you just multiply the numerators 27 - 16 which is 11 and leave the denominator which is 12.
And that's how you get 11/12.
