P4.6 shows a mixing tank initially containing 2000 lb of liquid water. The tank is fitted with two inlet pipes, one delivering h

ot water at a mass flow rate of 0.8 lb/s and the other delivering cold water at a mass flow rate of 1.2 lb/s. Water exits through a single exit pipe at a mass flow rate of 2.5 lb/s. Determine the amount of water, in lb, in the tank after one hour.

Answer:

Amount of water is <u>200 lb</u> in the tank after 1 hour.

Explanation:

Initial mass of liquid water in tank = m initial = 2000 lb

Final mass of liquid water in tank = m final

mass flow rate of hot water = m1 = 0.8 lb/s

mass flow rate of cold water= m2 = 1.2 lb/s

mass flow rate of liquid water through a single exit pipe =m3 =2.5 lb/s

time = t = 1hr

So the final mass of water in tank is calculated as following :

Following equation is derived from mass rate balanced equation

m final = m initial + (m1+m2-m3)t

          =2000 + (0.8 + 1.2 - 2.5) x 1

          =2000 + (0.8 + 1.2 -2.5) x (1 x 3600s/hr)

          = 2000 x 4.5

          =200 lb

Hence  Amount of water is <u>200 lb</u> in the tank after 1 hour.

If the speed of the dart is v0 just before it strikes the apple, how high does the apple move upward because of its collision wi
PilotLPTM [1.2K]

Answer:

\frac{1}{2}\frac{(M_dV_0)^2}{(M_d+M_a)^2} = h

Explanation:

First, we will use conservation of the linear momentum:

P_i =P_f

so:

M_dv_0 = (M_d+M_a)V_s

where M_d is the mass of the dart, v_0 is the speed of the dart just before it strickes the apple, M_a the mass of the apple and V_s the velocity of the apple and the dart after the collition.

Then, solving for V_s:

V_s = \frac{M_dV_0}{M_d+M_a}

now, using the conservation of energy:

E_i = E_f

so:

\frac{1}{2}(M_d+M_a)V_s^2 = (M_a+M_d)gh

where g is the gravity and h how high does the apple move upward.

Now, replacing V_s and solving for h, we get:

\frac{1}{2}(M_d+M_a)(\frac{M_dV_0}{M_d+M_a})^2 = (M_a+M_d)h

\frac{1}{2}\frac{(M_dV_0)^2}{(M_d+M_a)^2} = h

At a certain distance, the sound intensity level of a dog's bark is 59 dB. At that same distance, the sound intensity of a rock
babymother [125]

Answer:

102 dB

Explanation:

Intensity level is given by:

I(dB)=10log\frac{I}{I_o}

59=10log\frac{I_d}{I_o}\\I_d=10^{5.9}I_o

I_r=2\times10^4I_d=2\times10^4\times10^{5.9}I_o

I_r(dB)=10log\frac{I_r}{I_o}\\=10log\frac{2\times 10^{9.9}I_o}{I_o}=10\times10.2\\=102 dB
