Because they are not primarily fueled by light, these reactions are often known as the "light-independent reactions."

ATP and NADPH produced by the light reactions are used to power and support this activity. Calvin cycle reactions occur in the stroma, as opposed to light reactions, which occur in the thylakoid membrane (the inner space of chloroplasts).
