1989 was a year when Poland finally became a democratic, independent country. Soviet communism has fallen thanks to the negotiations between the communists and their opposition in Poland. In effect it was possible to make the first free election of the president at the end of 1990 (Lech Walesa was elected). Workers had a free right to form unions, but in the following years their significance and effectiveness decreased.
Officially the situation hasn't changed up to date, but most Polish people know that in spite of changing the political system, most of the pre-1989 politics are still in power, but it's not official.
