in their experiment, Rutherford and Marsden fired positively charged alpha particles at a very thin sheet of gold. over a period

of several months, the scientists made over 100,000 measurements. these measurements showed that a very small number of alpha particles were deflected backwards from the gold foil. use a nuclear model to explain this experimental result.

Atoms are made of electrons and a positively charged nucleus. The nucleus, however, only takes a tiny fraction of the atom's space. Hence, one could say that for a small object, an atom is 'nearly empty'.

When you send alpha particles on a sheet, most of them will go through the sheets, as they'll travel through the atom's 'empty' zone. Only a small fraction will actually meet the nuclei; as they are both charged positively, the alpha particles will undergo a repulsive force, and thus be deflected.

When they are far apart, the momentum of a proton is 3.2 ✕ 10−21, 0, 0 kg · m/s as it approaches another proton that is initiall
Rina8888 [55]
(6.0x10^-22, -1.40x10^-21, 0) kg*m/s Momentum is a conserved quantity. The total momentum of the system before and after the interactions will not change. So, let's look at the momentum before the interaction. (3.2x10^-21, 0, 0) kg*m/s and (0,0,0) kg*m/s After the interaction (2.6x10^-21, 1.40x10^-21, 0) kg*m/s and the other proton has to have a momentum that when added to this momentum equal the original value. Since the y and z vectors were initially 0, all we need for the y and x vector values of the result is to negate them. The x vector value will be 3.2x10^-21 - 2.6x10^-21 = 0.6x10^21 = 6.0x10^-22. So the other proton will have a momentum of (6.0x10^-22, -1.40x10^-21, 0) kg*m/s

Ratling [72]

It all comes to the doppler effect, the red shift means that the galaxy is moving away from us. The redshift is a result from the doppler effect, so as the galaxy moves away the wavelength expands, increasing the wavelength which responds to the red light.

9. When a balloon rises into the air, it
Ksenya-84 [330]

Answer:

Answer 3: When a balloon goes up higher in the air, its size will increase. Since there's less air in the upper atmosphere, there's less stuff pushing back on the balloon, and hence the pressure is lower, which allows the balloon to expand

Answer: C

Explanation:

As the balloon rises, the gas inside the balloon expands because the atmospheric pressure surrounding the balloon drops. The atmosphere is 100 to 200 times less dense at the float altitudes than on the ground. and as the air is heated inside the balloon it causes it to rise upwards (because it is lighter than the cooler air on the outside). When the pilot needs to bring the balloon down again, he simply reduces the temperature of the air inside the balloon causing it to slowly descend.
