katrin2010 [14]

Under Coolidge (1923-1929), the economy and society flourished stabilized; new policies focused on Americanizing immigrants already living in the United States and restricting the flow of new immigrants into the country.

Explanation:

1.What were the key policies and goals articulated by Republican political leaders of the 1920s?

How did they apply these to both domestic and foreign affairs?

Representative for the 1900-1930 era, was James M. Beck, an attorney under Presidents Roosevelt, Harding, and Coolidge, and a congressman from 1927-1933. That defended conservative principles such as nationalism, individualism, constitutionalism, the laissez-faire economy, property rights, and opposition to reform. Conservatives like Beck saw the need to regulate misbehavior in the business world with the intention of protecting corporate capitalism from radical forces, but were alarmed by Roosevelt's anti-business and pro-union proposals after 1905. They began to questioning the notion of a national authority beneficial to big capital, and the emphasized legalism, concern for the Constitution, and respect for America's past.

2.Which Americans gained the most, and which were largely left out during the postwar prosperity, and why?

Republicans returned to dominance in 1920 with the election of President Warren G. Harding, who was leading a campaign that promised a return to normality. Tucker (2010) argues that the 1924 election marked the "great wave of American conservatism," as the top two candidates campaigned for limited government, reduced taxes, and less regulation. The opposition was split between progressive party candidate Robert La Follette who won 17% of the vote, and Democrat John W. Davis, who took 29%, allowing Calvin Coolidge to easily win re-election.84 Under Coolidge (1923-1929), the economy and society flourished stabilized; new policies focused on Americanizing immigrants already living in the United States and restricting the flow of new immigrants into the country.
