HELP PLEASE. When finding the surface area of a composite figure, why is it often necessary to subtract sides common to each ind

ividual shape? Complete the explanation.
Identifiable shapes that are easy to find the (volume/surface area) of in composite figures will often have portions that overlap with each other. After finding the surface area of each individual shape, simply adding these surfaces areas together will result in a number (greater/less) than the real surface area. This means that after adding the surface areas of the individual shapes, it is necessary to (add/subtract) sides common to both shapes to get the true surface area.

Blababa [14]
To solve it, use the quadratic formula with (½)(-32.174 ft/s²) = a, 38 ft/s = b, and 30 ft = c. There are two answers; the only positive answer is t = 2.986 s

∠1 and ∠2 are alternate exterior angles where transversal BE crosses parallel lines AC and DF, therefore they are equal. ∠2 and ∠3 are opposite angles of a parallelogram, therefore they are equal.

... ∠1 = ∠2

... 3x -5 = 2x +15 . . . . substitute the given values

... x = 20 . . . . . . . . . . . add 5-2x

The measures of angles 1, 2, and 3 are 2·20+15 = 55 . . . degrees.
