Immigrants often have widely different experiences in society. Society also responds to them in different ways. Go to the Librar

y of Congress website Immigration and Relocation in U.S. History and read about people who have immigrated to the United States. Think about the pros and cons of a multicultural society. How do the experiences of the people in these interviews show those pros and cons? Write a short essay on the pros and cons of immigration. Cite specific information you have found. You can also use the CIA World Factbook for additional research.

Answer:

Pros: Multiculturalism allows people of different cultures to gain more exposure to other cultures. This, in turn, can give them a greater appreciation and tolerance for those cultures and potentially to other cultures they have not been exposed to yet. As they are exposed to music, food, dress, and other facets of cultures other than their own, it broadens their view of the world in general. Multiculturalism also allows for a better exchange of ideas, information, and ways of doing things. New minds, new ideas, different ways of viewing the world, etc. By gaining input from people with other cultural viewpoints, you can gain benefits that would not have occurred within a more insular society, simply because their way of looking at things is different than yours. Cons: The single biggest problem with a multicultural society is the divisions that can occur within it because of the different cultures involved. This is especially true if you have large numbers of people in multiple different cultures. Assimilation into the overall nation as a whole becomes much more difficult if you have large numbers of people clinging to their own culture, rather than attempting to “fit in” with the country they are living in. This can evolve from simple differences between cultures into open antagonism, strife, and even open violence and destruction. If you have two or more cultures that have a history of conflict between them, the odds of that conflict starting up between them in the “new” country they are now in greatly increases, the more of them there are. For example, if you had people from two different cultures that had a history of violent conflict between them, as long as their numbers in your country are small, the odds are that you would not have much interaction between them and the chances for open violence are rather small. This would rapidly change if you had tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of them in your country. The chances of violence between them would almost become inevitable after a certain point, simply because you have so many of them. While there is much to say about the benefits of multiculturalism, it also holds the potential for severe problems if it isn’t kept under control.

Explanation: I used this as my answer to the question, and you are free to use it. If this is the question for Plato, the answer only said " Your essay should list both pros and cons of immigration, as well as specific examples from the research." So basically saying that the website doesn't have an exact answer. But I hope this helps you!
