The strategy of the Union during the last stages of the Civil War was called “Total War” which meant that there was a war without limits, without ethics, with no distinctions between civilians and soldiers. The Union adopted the tactics because they knew that if they attacked the southern population the Confederacy would not stand very long.

With this strategy, the Union was able to destroy the South’s economy and morale, they destroyed railroads, deprived people and the army from supplies and communications, they burned farmland.
