Individual freedom, for sure. I'm sure border disputes and trade difficulties could be argued both ways, but competition for resources, I don't think applies.

The following are some of the causes of the Civil War:

Border disputes: As the United States continued to expand and gain more territory, each new state added power either to the South or to the North. This made border disputes grow and play a key role in the evolution of the conflict between the North states and the South states, which ended in the Civil War.

Trade difficulties: In 1857, representatives of the Southern states set lower tariffs on imported goods. This created resentment on the Northern representatives, which main economic activity was based on different type of industries.

Individual freedom: Perhaps the main cause of the Civil War was the two opposite views on individual freedom that the Northern states had in comparison to the Southern states. Southern state's relied heavily on farming and most of their citizens and leaders believed it was their right to posses and to expand slavery throughout the country, as they needed the slaves to work on their farms. Citizens of the Northern states were calling for the abolition of slavery and the importance of individual freedom for every human living in the United States, including the slaves.
