Convert all to decimals
1/4=0.25
1/2=0.5 so

2 and 1/2=2.5
3=3
-1 and 1/4=-1.25
4 and 1/4=4.25
1 and 1/4=1.25
-1 and 1/2=-1.5
add all together
2.5+3-1.25+4.25+1.25-1.5=8.25=8 and 1/4
