Light emitted by element X passes through a diffraction grating that has 1200 slits/mm. The interference pattern is observed on

a screen 77.0 cm behind the grating. First-order maxima are observed at distances of 58.0 cm , 65.4 cm , and 94.5 cm from the central maximum. What are the wavelengths of light emitted by element X?

Answer:

500 nm, 530 nm, 650 nm

Explanation:

Let's say that there is diffraction grating observed with a slit spacing of s. Respectively we must determine the angle θ which will help us determine the 3 wavelengths ( λ ) of the light emitted by element X. This can be done applying the following formulas,

s( sin θ ) = m * λ, such that y = L( tan θ ) - where y = positioning, or the distance of the first - order maxima, and L = constant, of 77 cm

Now the grating has a slit spacing of -

s = 1 / N = 1 / 1200 = 0.833 * 10⁻³ mm

The diffraction angles of the " positionings " should thus be -

θ = tan⁻¹ * ( 0.58 / 0.77 ) = 37°,

θ = tan⁻¹ * ( 0.654 / 0.77 ) = 40°,

θ = tan⁻¹ * ( 0.945 / 0.77 ) = 51°

The wavelengths of these three bright fringes should thus be calculated through the formula : λ = s( sin θ ) -

λ = 0.833 * 10⁻³ * sin( 37° ) = ( 500 * 10⁻⁹ m )

λ = 0.833 * 10⁻³ * sin( 40° ) = ( 530 * 10⁻⁹ m )

λ = 0.833 * 10⁻³ * sin( 51° ) = ( 650 * 10⁻⁹ m )

Wavelengths : 500 nm, 530 nm, 650 nm

A 0.350kg bead slides on a curved fritionless wire,
LuckyWell [14K]

Answer:

h2 = 0.092m

Explanation:

From a balance of energy from point A to point B, we get speed before the collision:

m1*g*h-\frac{m1*V_B^2}{2}=0 Solving for Vb:

V_B=\sqrt{2gh}=6.56658m/s

Since the collision is elastic, we now that velocity of bead 1 after the collision is given by:

V_{B'}=V_B*\frac{m1-m2}{m1+m2} = \sqrt{2gh}* \frac{m1-m2}{m1+m2}=-1.34316m/s

Now, by doing another balance of energy from the instant after the collision, to the point where bead 1 stops, we get the distance it rises:

m1*g*h2-\frac{m1*V_{B'}^2}{2}=0 Solving for h2:

h2 = 0.092m

Compare the collision between two baseballs and a catcher's mitt.
Nookie1986 [14]

The applied force is different for the two cases

The case A with a greater force involves the greatest momentum change

The case A involves the greatest force.

What is collision?

 • This is the head-on impact between two object moving in opposite or same direction.

The initial momentum of the two ball is the same.

P = mv

where;

 • m is the mass of each
 • v is the initial velocity of each ball

Since the force applied by the arm is different, the final velocity of the balls before stopping will be different.

Thus, the final momentum of each ball will be different

The impulse experienced by each ball is different since impulse is the change in momentum of the balls.

J = ΔP

The force applied by the rigid arm is greater than the force applied by the relaxed arm because the force applied by the rigid arm will cause the ball to be brought to rest faster.

Thus, we can conclude the following;

 • The applied force is different for the two cases
 • The case A with a greater force involves the greatest momentum change
 • The case A involves the greatest force.

Which has a greater force: a semi-truck at rest or a moving bicycle?
Wittaler [7]

Although the semi truck certainly has a larger mass, it is not in motion and therefore does not have any momentum. The bicycle however has both mass and velocity and therefore has the larger momentum of the pair.
