From 1995 - 2008 in the US 648 people were struck by lightening. 531 of them were men. You want to see if this observation diffe

rs from the null hypothesis, that 50% of people who are hit by lightening would be men, based on the proportion of men in the population as a whole. Calculate the probability under the normal distribution of getting a result of 531 or more (including the continuity correction). Use the binomial test with a normal approximation. What is your conclusion?

Answer:

Because z is higher than any given value in the chart we come to the conclusion To reject null hypothesis

Step-by-step explanation:

Sample proportion = p= 531/648 = 0.8194

This is the proportion of men that were hit by lightening

Null hypothesis: H0: p = 0.5

Alternate hypothesis: H1: p ≠ 0.5

Test statistics z = 0.8194-0.5/(√0.5x0.5/648)

= 0.8194-0.5/√0.0003858

= 0.3194/0.019642

= 16.26

Since the z > 1.96 (at 5% significance) we reject the null hypothesis.

Therefore in conclusion we say z is higher than given values in the chart so we reject null hypothesis.

Answer:

0.22 -1 *0.029 =0.191

0.22 +1 *0.029 =0.249

And the best option would be:

D. (0.191 to 0.249)

Step-by-step explanation:

For this case we know that the mean is:

\bar X = 0.22

And the standard error is given by:

SE = 0.029

We want to construct a 68% confidence interval so then the significance level would be :

\alpha=1-0.68 = 0.32 and \alpha/2 =0.16. The confidence interval is given by:

\bar X \pm z_{\alpha/2} SE

Now we can find the critical value using the normal standard distribution and we got looking for a quantile who accumulate 0.16 of the area on each tail and we got:

z_{\alpha/2}= 1

And replacing we got:

0.22 -1 *0.029 =0.191

0.22 +1 *0.029 =0.249

And the best option would be:

D. (0.191 to 0.249)

Write <u>two functions</u> that <u>describes</u> the <u>decrease of the population</u> after <u>t years.</u>

1.  In one study, a population of 784 orangutans is expected to decrease at a rate of 25 orangutans per year. Then after t years the number of orngutans will be

y=784-25t.

2.  In a second study, the population of a group of 817 orangutans is expected to decrease at a rate of 36 per year. Then after t years the number of orngutans will be

y=817-36t.

3. Equate right sides of the equations:

784-25t=817-36t,\\ \\36t-25t=817-784,\\ \\11t=33,\\ \\t=3\ years.
