A system consists of N particles that can occupy two energy levels: a nondegenerate ground state and a three-fold degenerate exc

ited state, which lies at an energy of 0.25 eV above the ground state. At a temperature of 960 K, find the ratio of the number of particles in the excited state to the number in the ground state.

Answer:

Ng = 0.893 N,  Ne = 0.107N

Explanation:

Number of particles in Ground state = Ng

Number of particles in Excited state = Ne

Ne/Ng = e^{(-ΔE)/kt}

Since excited state is 3 fold degenerate

Ne/Ng =3 x e^{(-ΔE)/kt}

ΔE = Energy difference between ground and excited states = 0.25eV

T = 960 K

Constant k = 8.617 x 10^-5 eV/K

Ne/Ng = 3 x e^{-0.25/(8.617x10^-5) x 960}

           = 3 x e^(-3.188645)

           = 3 x 0.0412 = 0.1237 ≅ 0.12

Ne = 0.12 Ng

but Ne + Ng = N, where is N is total number of particles, substituting Ne into equation we get,

Ng(1 + 0.12) = N

Ng = N/1.12 = 0.893N

and Ne = 0.12 x 0.893 N = 0.107 N

Which element has atoms with valence electrons in a higher energy level than those of calcium (Ca)?
enyata [817]

Here, we are required to determine which element has atoms with Valence electrons in a higher energy level than those of calcium.

The Valence electrons of the Caesium, Cs atoms has higher energy level than those of Calcium.

First, we need to determine the electronic configuration of each of the elements

  • Therefore the Calcium electron configuration will be:
  • 1s²2s²2p⁶3s²3p⁶4s²

  • Therefore, for Cs Electron Configuration:
  • 1s² 2s²2p⁶3s²3p⁶3d¹⁰ 4s²4p⁶4d¹⁰ 5s²5p⁶ 6s¹
  • Therefore, For lithium, The electron configuration of lithium is :
  • 1s²2s¹

  • For oxygen, Therefore the O electron configuration will be:
  • 1s²2s²2p⁴

  • For bromine, the electronic configuration is 1s²2s²2p⁶3s²3p⁶4s²3d¹⁰4p⁵

Among the elements in the option, the Valence electrons of the Caesium, Cs atoms has higher energy level than those of Calcium.

This is so because the only Valence electron of Cs is located in the 6s orbital and as such has the highest energy level amongst all of the elements.

A uniform solid sphere has a moment of inertia I about an axis tangent to its surface. What is the moment of inertia of this sph
arsen [322]

Answer:

option E

Explanation:

given,

I is moment of inertia about an axis tangent to its surface.

moment of inertia about the center of mass

I_{CM} = \dfrac{2}{5}mR^2.....(1)

now, moment of inertia about tangent

I= \dfrac{2}{5}mR^2 + mR^2

I= \dfrac{7}{5}mR^2...........(2)

dividing equation (1)/(2)

\dfrac{I_{CM}}{I}= \dfrac{\dfrac{2}{5}mR^2}{\dfrac{7}{5}mR^2}

\dfrac{I_{CM}}{I}=\dfrac{2}{7}

I_{CM}=\dfrac{2}{7}I

the correct answer is option E
