The geographic feature wich was central in helping the Romans unify their empire was actually multisided. On one hand they were in the heart of Europe - being on the peninsula where Rome was located gave them a very central location which had at the same time good connections to the sea. All of this made it easier to establish good roads which enabled a unificationary vision of Rome.
