Osmosis maintains the body cells at a specific concentration by osmoregulation.

Further Explanation:

Osmosis is the process of movement of water molecules from higher concentration gradient to the region where there is lower concentration gradient of water.

The water movement in or out of the cell depends on the solutions that surrounds the cell. There can be basically three types of solutions. They are:

1. Hypertonic solution: The solution having higher solute concentration within them. Therefore in these solution the cells shrinks as it losses water to the solution.

2. Hypotonic solution: The solution having lower solute concentration present in them. So the water enters into the cell leading to the swelling of the same.

3. Isotonic solution: when there is no net movement of the water molecules into and out of the cell.

The body cell maintains its specific concentration by the process of osmoregulation. The osmoregulation can be defined as the process by which the salt and water balance is maintained across the membrane within the body fluids that consists of water, electrolyte and non-electrolyte. Osmotic balance is controlled by both electrolyte and non-electrolyte. The body membrane is semi-permeable which allows movement of certain type of solute. The solute and water movement equalizes the solute concentration across the cell. It is taken as negative as it decreases the water potential.

Osmosis is the process by which solvent molecules move through a semi permeable membrane from a region of low concentration to the region of high concentration. The movement of the solvent depend on the solute concentration at each side of the plasma membrane. In a situation, where the solute concentration on both side of the membrane is the same, then there will be no net movement of solvent across the membrane.

Body cells have specific ideal concentration levels for each ions in the cell, osmosis help to maintain this concentration by means of osmoregulation. Osmoregulation is the process by which constant osmotic pressure in the fluid content of cells is maintained by the control of salt and water concentration.

tia_tia [17]
Evolution and natural selection are for C. The long term survival of an entire species of organisms. Organisms are better suited to live in a particular environment due to the transmission of specific genes from the parental generation to the offspring that can lead to these species evolving if much mutations are associated also with the passing down of specific alleles for respective genes that enable the organism to survive for a longer duration in its environment.
