A heat engine typically uses energy provided in the form of heat to do work and then exhausts the heat which cannot be used to do work. Since the internal energy of an ideal gas depends upon its temperature, the PV diagram along with the temperatures calculated from the ideal gas law determine the changes in the internal energy of the gas so that the amount of heat added can be evaluated from the first law of thermodynamics.

1. What is the average velocity of a car that moved 40 km East and 80 km West in 2 hours?
irina [24]

The average velocity is 20 km/h west

Explanation:

The velocity of an object is given by:

velocity = \frac{d}{t}

where

d is the displacement

t is the time elapsed

The displacement of an object is a vector connecting the initial position and the final position of motion.

In this problem, the car moved

40 km East

80 km West

Therefore, the displacement is given by (taking West as positive direction)

d=80 km - 40 km = 40 km West

The time elapsed is

t = 2 h

Therefore, the average velocity is

v=\frac{40 km}{2h}=20 km/h in the West direction.
