Answer:

Many different influences led the colonists to have a highly developed sense of unity and identity. War and British incompetence and victimization largely culminated in colonial unification, while (ethnic) plurality and the divide between Europe and North America culminated in a distinctly American identity. Britain's debt from the French and Indian War led it to attempt to maintain power over its colonies and to collect revenue through direct taxation (e.g., the Stamp Act, the Townshend Acts, the Tea Act, and the Unreasonable Acts), causing tensions between Britain and its colonies.
