Immigrants that came from Europe to seek a better life. They had no freedom of religion so they sought out somewhere they could practice their own religion without being killed or getting in serious trouble. They were forced to practice another religion like Catholicism, however did they did not they would be accused of heresy. Heresy if when you commit a crime of faith under a ruling.
