Differentiating with respect to time

Basic Power Rule:

  • f(x) = cxⁿ
  • f’(x) = c·nxⁿ⁻¹

Step-by-step explanation:

<u>Step 1: Define</u>

<u />l = 30 \ cm\\w = l\\\frac{dl}{dt} = 2 \ cm/h\\h = 20 \ cm\\\frac{dh}{dt} = 3 \ cm/h<u />

<u />

<u>Step 2: Differentiate</u>

  1. Rewrite [VRP]:                                                                                                 V = l^2h
  2. Differentiate [Basic Power Rule]:                                                                         \frac{dV}{dt} = 2l\frac{dl}{dt} \frac{dh}{dt}

<u>Step 3: Solve for Rate</u>

  1. Substitute:                                                                                                           \frac{dV}{dt} = 2(30 \ cm)(2 \ cm/h)(3 \ cm/h)
  2. Multiply:                                                                                                               \frac{dV}{dt} = 360 \ cm^3/h

Here this tells us that our volume is decreasing (ice melting) at a rate of 360 cm³ per hour.

The corners of a square lie on a circle of diameter d = 0.35 m. each side of the square has a length l. find l.
sergeinik [125]

Refer to the attached image.

As we can observe ABCD is a square, whose corners that is A,B,C and D lie on the circle.

The diameter AC = 0.35 meter.

We have to find the side of square.

Let the measure of side of a square be 'l' meter

In triangle ABC,

By Pythagoras theorem, we get

(AC)^2 = (AB)^2 + (BC)^2

(0.35)^2 = (l)^2 + (l)^2

(0.35)^2 = 2(l)^2

\frac{(0.35)^2}{2} = (l)^2

l^2 = 0.06125

So, l = 0.25 meter

Therefore, the measure of side of the square is 0.25 meter.
