The battle takes place because of the terror Grendel has put on the kingdom, where Beowulf has taken it upon himself to take care of for the people. Simple as that, Grendel is against the people and Beowulf is for them. This shows that Beowulf's men are loyal because they are willing to fight to protect him, because of his reliable good characters he has, Beowulf inspired the people <span>around him to trust him</span>
