Earthquakes is a sudden movement on the earths surface and also it can be measured by the size and the range for the weakest ones that can not be felt on the earth. Also it is a sudden release of energy in the earths lithosphere that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes can be measured by using measurements from the seismometers.
