Emotion-focused coping is based on reducing the effect of negative emotions in the person. This may be done in a positive manner (writing a journal) or negative (substance abuse).
Problem-solving coping is based on identifying the stressor and attempting to remove it. This method, however, is not useful for situations beyond our control (e.g. death of a loved one).
