The answer is: to show the depth of the mothers willingness to stand up for her heritage.

In "borders" King relates the story of a Blackfoot who lives in Canadian side and when she went to visit her daughter with his son, she is asked to tell if she is either Canadian or American, however she stand up on her Blackfoot nationality, after sleeping in the car by not returning to Canada and gain a lot of media attention, they two, mother and son, are able to come in America and received their Blackfoot citizen.
