They experienced problems with there crop of watermelons because they were using chemicals to grow them faster. If they grow fast they can get to the market faster making the farmers more money. But what they didn't know was that hey were going to grow so fast that they were going to burst. "Several farmers had treated their watermelon crop. But the melons grew much faster than anyone expected—in fact, so fast that they burst apart."
