Solve using substitution.

Mathematics

You're right-when you try to do a substitution you get nonsense. Think about it-if you rewrite y - x = 8 to be y = x + 8, and the other equation is y = x + 2, there are NO SOLUTIONS that would satisfy (x,y) for BOTH equations.
The second problem you can just add so that you eliminate 5x, and you get -2y = 12; y = -6; replace back into the equation:
-5x + -6= 4
-5x = 10
X = -2, then check your work

Measure of Angle 1 is 5x.
Measure of Angle 3 is x-24.

What is the measure of Angle 1?
olga55 [171]

Answer:

The answer to your question is: 30°

Step-by-step explanation:

Data

m∠ 1 = 5x

m∠ 3 = x - 24

Process

m ∠ 1 = m ∠ 3 because they are vertical angles

            5x = x - 24

            5x - x = 24

            4x = 24

            x = 24 / 4

            x = 6

Angle 1 = 5(6)

            = 30°

In ΔCDE, \overline{CE}
abruzzese [7]

Answer:

m\angle CDE=14^o

Step-by-step explanation:

we know that

An exterior angle of a triangle is equal to the sum of the opposite interior angles.

see the attached figure to better understand the problem

so

∠DEF=∠ECD+∠CDE

substitute the given values

(4x+5)^o=(x+9)^o+(x+8)^o

solve for x

Combine like terms

(4x+5)^o=(2x+17)^o

Group terms

4x-2x=17-5

2x=12

x=6

Find the measure of angle CDE

m\angle CDE=(x+8)^o

substitute the value of x

m\angle CDE=(6+8)=14^o
