The US government limits the use of certain pesticides through laws passed in the Endangered Species Protection Program because some pesticides can harm non-targeted species. They can potentially not just kill the critters they are after but also kill other species that are so low in population it could wipe them out entirely. This helps preserve them and protect them in the hopes that we can find a way to increase their population.
