The Lascaux caves were discovered in 1940, in the Dordogne region of southwestern France. The wall paintings of the caves are famous for their paintings which contain the only largest image which has been found till now, It also contains abstract signs which have not been deciphered. The caves contain more than 1900 images, most of which are animals. The remaining images are of geometric symbols. Due to the realism in the images, these caves are also referred to as the <em>Sistine Chapel of Prehistory</em>. It has been added to the UNESCO world heritage sites.
The immediate aftermath of the battle was enough of a victory to give President Lincoln the confidence to release the Emancipation Proclamation which declared an end to slavery in Confederate territory.
