It was led General MacArthur and also Admiral Chester Nimitz. They took over many of the surrounding islands, including the Marianas Islands, which would later be the launch point for the 2 atomic bombs. The island hopping was a slow and steady idea that sacrificed the lives of many, because it required heavy navy shelling from offshore and then marines going up the island to capture it, while it was being shelled.
