The series of wars and battle s between the Muslim Moors and the Christian Kingdoms for the control of the Iberia peninsula is known as Reconquista. It lasted from 718 to 1492. The Moors lived in the northern African countries of Morocco and Algeria and were Muslims. The reason for the beginning of Reconquista was the defeat of the Muslim army at the Battle of Covadonga in 718. It was the first important victory of Christians over the Muslims. The Muslims and Christians continued to fight each other for the next hundred years. Many battles were won and lost on both sides. The Reconquista ended when Spain was united by the marriage of King Aragon and Queen Isabella first of Castille in 1463. They took back Granada from the Muslims in 1492.
