(y - 3)/( - 5 - 3) = - $\frac{5}{8}$

(y - 3)/(-8) = - $\frac{5}{8}$

multiply both sides by - 8 to eliminate fractions

y - 3 = 5

add 3 to both sides

y = 5 + 3 =8
