An ecologist, Raymond Lindeman, introduced the ten percent rule in 1942. It is not an exact rule but rather a rule of thumb. It states that that when an organism/species is consumed by another organism/species of higher trophic level, only ten percent of energy is stored by the higher trophic one. The rest of the energy is lost during energy transfer; or transformed as respiration; or lost due to incomplete digestion.

....the latter stores only 10% of energy. The rest of the energy is lost during energy transfer, or transformed as respiration, or lost to incomplete digestion by species of a higher trophic level.
