Georgia’s secession was one of the first events that led to the American Civil War.
The main issue that concerned Georgia’s government was the issue of slavery. In the Georgia Declaration of Causes of Secession, hostility towards slavery by the northern states of the confederation is repeated constantly as the main reason for secession.
The reason why Georgia opposed to the liberation of slaves so intensely was because its economy was completely tied to the free labor of African men and women. Large plantations, especially cotton ones, depended on slaves to work on them, and landowners were afraid of the possibility of a complete change of economic arrangements. So the decision to secede was heavily motivated by economics. It was seen as the only way in which abolition could be prevented.
