Arab traders and merchants used the mediterranean sea to reach Europe. A major trade route in the Red Sea during the 7th and 8th century that linked Italy to South west India, crossing the Mediterranean Sea, going through the arabian Peninsula and the Red Sea, and then to the Arabian Sea and India was vital to the Arabian and Persian merchants. The maritime routes were dominated by Arab traders during that time, and the main goods that were exported were spices, which were on high demand in Europe, especially for medicine.
